Company Overview
Our client, a manufacturing organization is looking to hire folks from manufacturing companies producing mechanical or electrical products and having experience in leading product development teams across mechanical and electronics.
Position Overview
This is a newly created leadership role. Today, our three PD teams — Chennai (electronics), Coimbatote (mechanical), and Bangalore (mechanical) — each report directly to the MD/CEO and operate largely independently. We're bringing in a single technical leader to unify them: one function, shared standards, a real project management discipline, and a
forward-looking product roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Unify and lead all three PD teams — electronics in Coimbatore, mechanical in Chennai and Bangalore — into one coherent function with shared standards and a collaborative culture.
- Own the Year 1 product release calendar. On-time delivery of all 15 committed releases is treated as a non- negotiable commitment.
- Build a structured, stage-gated product development process (concept → design → development → testing/validation → certification → release) where largely informal processes exist today.
- Own certification strategy across the portfolio — IEC compliance by design, CE certification management, and UL-compatible design architecture for export-bound products.
- Build and own a prioritised, forward-looking product roadmap, working closely with Business Development, India Sales, and Exports.
- Own the formal handover from Product Development to Engineering — complete release packages (BOM, drawings, test reports, certification documents) and a clear change-management protocol for post-release changes.
- Set common technical standards and documentation practices across all three locations, and build design-for-manufacturability discipline into the PD process.
Skills & Experience
- Essential:
- 15–20 years in product development or R&D, with at least 5 years leading multi-disciplinary development teams.
- Technical breadth across electronics/firmware/software and mechanical product development — deep strength in one discipline with a credible ability to lead across both is acceptable.
- A proven record of delivering product development projects to fixed release dates in a multi-project environment.
- Hands-on experience with IEC standards and the CE certification process, including managing external test laboratories and certification bodies.
- Experience building or significantly improving a product development process in an organisation where it was previously informal.
- Experience leading geographically distributed teams.
- Strong written and spoken English; comfort presenting to senior leadership.
- Preferred:
- Background in power protection equipment, protection relays, switchgear, control panels, or related power-sector products.
- Experience with UL certification processes.
- Exposure to design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and New Product Introduction (NPI) practices.
